Celebrate National Safety Month the Right Way with These 3 Safety Tips

June is finally here, which means a month filled with cook-outs, pool parties and most importantly…. safety!

You probably weren’t expecting that last one, were you? Well, put down the grilling tongs and listen up –  June is National Safety Month! Observed annually, National Safety Month focuses on reducing leading causes of injury and death at work, on the road, and in our homes and communities.

In honor of such an important topic, we thought we would share some of the top tips that we always try to follow to ensure overall safety in the workplace.

1. Be aware of your surroundings!

It sounds obvious, but the first step to safety is awareness. Like that final step on the stairs that is just a hair taller than the others. Once you’ve learned where the risks lie, it is your obligation to not only keep yourself safe from harm, but to also inform others of potential dangers as well.

2. Clean Up Your Space

Being aware of your surroundings will be a heck-of-a-lot easier if you have a clear space. Boxes, files, and large amounts of clutter can create tripping hazards and injury. Nobody enjoys a stubbed toe, especially three weeks in a row!

3. Take Fire Safety Seriously

Local fire departments responded to approximately 3,800 office fires a year according to the National Fire Protection Association, with leading to almost 40 injuries annually. Taking small precautions can add up to huge savings in this fiery category. Important areas to check include:

  • Make sure all cords are in good repair

  • Never block or obstruct fire sprinklers

  • Inspect all space heaters, or don’t even use them

  • Never block escape routes

These three safety tips are a great place to start, but in all honesty these are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to safety preparation and prevention of danger. If you’re hungry for more info, our friends over at National Safety Council (NSC) will be breaking down a new topic each week during the month of June, including: emergency preparedness, wellness, falls, and driving. Go check them out at https://www.nsc.org to get all the details.

If there is one thing to remember throughout this sunny and safe month, please recognize that most accidents can be prevented if you follow the correct procedures, and that safety always starts with you! Now, (carefully) go enjoy your barbecue.

When health and safety is on the line, you want a qualified company that you can trust to put those pesky pathogens in their place. Don’t wait any longer!
