How to Build Your Own COVID-Cleaning Sanitation Wipes

As the number of COVID-19 infected Americans continues to increase across the country, people are still trying to find ways to stay safe. Since it’s unlikely that a safe vaccine will be available before the end of 2020, this will get more difficult as the seasons begin to change. While warmer months have allowed us to social distance outside, the cold is coming, and it will inevitably push activities back indoors. This makes it much harder to social distance and increases the importance of physically removing the virus from surfaces and high-touch areas regularly. However, the demand for sanitation products continues to be higher than what most suppliers can keep up with and this causes problems for safely disinfecting public places, medical offices, and your home.

The demand for sanitation products in March, April, and May of 2020 left many people without any options. Hand sanitizers, dish soap, cleaning wipes, disinfectant sprays, and many other essential supplies were flying off the shelves. If you happened to have gotten lucky, you’d find an off-brand hand sanitizer made of questionable ingredients tucked in the corner somewhere.

While things have gotten better in terms of production, it begs the question: what’s going to happen when we migrate back indoors? Having the right cleaning and disinfecting products is integral in containing the spread of COVID-19, but if they’re not available it can be disheartening. By utilizing professional cleaning services and understanding the proper ingredients for an effective DIY sanitation product, you’ll stay prepared regardless of what stores have in stock.

Creating an Effective DIY Sanitation Product

To make your own sanitation wipes at home, you only need a few ingredients. The main ingredients you’ll want to buy to ensure that your product actually does its job and kills the coronavirus is a disinfectant cleaner on the EPA list. Maximum strengthen disinfectant is a good item to have around, but it’s important that you don’t mistake this for a hand sanitizing product. Our DIY sanitizing product is to eradicate viruses, pathogens, and bacteria on high-touch surfaces around your home or place of business.

Once you get your preferred industrial strength disinfectant, all you need are 6×9 dry wipes and a charging tub with an attached lid like the ones used on baby wipe containers. Place a roll of the dry wipes into the container and saturate it with your disinfectant. Make sure that you use a strong wipe that’s 100% synthetic polyester to avoid having it fall apart or disintegrate over time. Keep the tub in your kitchen or frequently used rooms next to some surgical gloves and use it on high-touch surfaces throughout the day. Always make sure that you read the warning label on the disinfectant that you’re using and avoid handling it without gloves if the label indicates that any contact with skin could lead to irritation.

By following this formula to create your own DIY sanitation product, you’ll end up with about 1,300 wipes costing only $0.10 per wipe.

If you need to make your own hand sanitizer, you’ll want to look at using a disinfectant that’s less harsh, or at least diluting the solution to avoid irritation. Remember, since most people use hand sanitizer multiple times a day, harsh chemicals can lead to dry hands, irritation, or even rashes. If you enjoy the gel texture of hand sanitizers, you’ll need to get 1/3 cup of gel or glycerin. Then take 2/3 cups of rubbing alcohol of at least 70% alcohol concentration and mix the two together. The gel helps to dilute the hand sanitizer and keep your hands moisturized. If you want, you can add different types of essential oils to give your hand sanitizer a pleasant smell and improve the overall moisturizing properties. Once done, place the finalized product into a spray bottle and use when needed.

Remember, hand sanitizer is a great way to ensure that your hands stay clean when you don’t have access to soap and warm water, but washing your hands is always a better option. Use hand sanitizer while you’re out and then make sure to wash your hands with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds when you get home or to a location with access to a sink.
