Why a Clean Bathroom Matters for Your Business and Bottom Line!

Did you know that restrooms take up 5% of the space of an average facility, they also contain 20% of the dirt? Restrooms also generate 80% of all complaints in a commercial facility! No single area generates more complaints than restrooms do.

Let’s let that sink in for a moment.

When it comes to customer satisfaction, if you’re looking to make a strong first impression for guests, customers, and employees, the restroom is the first place you should start.

In another study researchers took a look at how the cleanliness of an educational facility’s restrooms affected how the institution was perceived by prospective students and parents. Boy did it leave an impression! The researchers found that 65% of respondents reported that lavatories influenced their impression of the overall school they attended. What’s more, 60% of responding parents recommended that prospective students inspect restrooms before making the decision to enroll! If that doesn’t motivate you to take a second-look at your restroom cleaning standards, we don’t know what will!

How A Clean Restroom Can Help Your Business:

Improves Your Brand Equity:

Brand equity is the commercial value that comes from consumers’ perceptions of the brand’s product and services, rather than from the product or service itself.

To put this into perspective, think for a moment of a well-known, high-end store, somewhere like Nordstrom or Bloomingdale’s. These stores are well-known for evoking an air of luxury, quality, and prestige.

Now, try to recall these retailer’s bathrooms. What sticks out?

They’re all spotless, right? They’re well lit, shiny, and inviting. This type of attention to cleanliness and detail sets them apart from competitors, and leaves customers coming back. It also helps customers associate their business and brand with high-end, more expensive taste, which also defines their brand equity that way.

Positive Client Experience:

A common practice for testing business success and growth is through customer feedback. In hospitals, one of the first questions pertains to housekeeping appearance and standards, and patients have replied that their impression of the quality of care can be related back to the cleanliness of their environment. In another study, researchers found that 86 percent of U.S. adults equate the cleanliness of a restaurant’s restroom with the cleanliness of its kitchen. The survey also revealed that 75 percent of U.S. adults would not return to a restaurant with dirty restrooms.

Regardless of industry, clean restrooms directly impact a business’ ability to attract and retain customers. It’s safe to say that if your restroom is at risk of finding Oscar the Grouch hiding in your trashcan, then it’s likely not going to enjoy return customers!

Sets A Precedent for Continued Cleanliness:

A clean restroom is much easier to maintain than a dirty one, and has much higher likelihood of users treating it with higher respect. Be honest here… if you are in an already filthy bathroom and drop some toilet paper in a puddle on the floor, how likely are you to pick it up? (Gold star to all of you humanitarians out there that would do it.)

Now what if we flip the script, and the floors are so shiny that you see your face shining back up at you from the floor? Are you more likely to contribute to cleaning that space? It’s a dramatic example, but a relevant one. If a restroom is clean, then people often think twice about dropping trash on the floor, missing the garbage can, missing the soap, or generally mistreating the area.
